Honduras recognizes Jerusalem

Honduras recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital—

President Juan Orlando Hernandez of Honduras will on Friday August 30, initiate the final move of recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by travelling to the city to inaugurate a ‘diplomatic office’.

Honduras’ foreign ministry in a statement ahead of the inauguration, said Israel had proposed the embassy’s relocation to Jerusalem even though it is being “analyzed and evaluated in the international and national context“.

AFP reported that the diplomatic office in the disputed city will be an extension of Honduras’ Tel Aviv-based embassy.

“For me it’s the recognition that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel,” Hernandez said on Tuesday August 27.

Recall that the US government severed its relationship with Palestinian authorities in May 2018, by moving its embassy to the city. Two days later, Guatemala moved its embassy to the capital. Paraguay also moved its embassy to Jerusalem but reversed the decision after 4 months.

The city has been a major cause of dispute between the Israeli government and Palestinian authortities. While Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital, Palestinians see East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.
